FAQs - Obedience
What is the S.T.A.R. Puppy Program?
This is the AKC program opened to all puppies (both
purebreds and mixed) designed to get them and their owners off to a great start. This program involves basic obedience
training, puppy socialization and owner education concerning puppy development, behavior, nutrition etc.
Who may take the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Program?
Dogs up to 1 year of age who have completed vaccinations
accompanied by their owners are eligible to take the class.
What are the benefits of taking the AKC
S.T.A.R. Puppy Program?
Puppies that attend become well-socialized and they
learn the skills that are the foundation of other learning. Owners who attend are helped to understand canine development
and how to reach their desired training goals with their canine companion.
How is the S.T.A.R. Puppy Program related
to the AKC Canine Good Citizen program?
The skills on the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Program evaluation
are the "pre-CGC" skills. However, puppies do not have to take the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy evaluation to take the
CGC test. The S.T.A.R. Puppy Program was developed as the result of ongoing requests from owners and CGC ealuators
to have a program before the CGC that was designed especially for puppies and their owners.
